First run of the year

January 3, 2017 – 10:58 am

Went for the first run of the year today through the forest loop. From home through the forest and back is 3 miles. Managed a 12 minute 11 second pace over that distance. That’s pretty good considering the shape I’m in. I haven’t run since summer and I’ve put on more than a little weight. I’m currently around 210 lbs.

My New Year’s Resolution is to run 250 miles this year 2017. That’s about 5 miles per week. Here we go.

Today’s run

January 4, 2017 – 9:49 am

Another forest run.

18° run

January 5, 2017 – 11:12 am

18° F. After the first mile I warmed up nicely. I kept up a good pace, too. Today’s run is my third this week. My legs are feeling it. My thighs feel more rigid than loose. Otherwise, I’m feeling good.

The night before

January 9, 2017 – 7:28 pm

Tomorrow I’m going to run. Tomorrow I get to run. Tomorrow I run. I should have run Sunday. I didn’t. I’m craving the exercise.

A good little run

January 10, 2017 – 10:37 am

It felt so good to run today. I begin with an uphill climb, steady but not brutal, enough to quickly wind me. From the top of the street it is just a short hop over to the forest. Once there I just keep my feet going and let my eyes soak in the luminescent green ferns growing from the forest floor, from atop aged fallen trees and high up on the sides of trees, in the crooks of their branchy arms. The white noise of distant car traffic fades and becomes the shushing chatter of fast flowing streams.

5 mile

January 13, 2017 – 11:01 am

Snow and ice, downed trees, white branches, blue sky and the river flowing fast. It’s about 28° out, sun low in the southern sky. This is my first 5mile run since summer. 11-12 minute pace is fine by me, though it feels more like trudging than running. Still, gotta start somewhere. Happy Friday.

Icy 5 mile

January 14, 2017 – 10:50 am

Managed another 5mi this morning. A bit icier today. Instead of falling branches I experienced falling ice coming off branches thawing in the slow radiation of a winter sun.

The Seventh Snowday

January 17, 2017 – 11:35 am

Saw some blue skies down the Willamette Valley at the start of my run. Skies all pewter by the end. Cold, 32°, warmer than recent days. Some dry patches on the road, some frictionless ice, mostly hard packed snow and ice covered here and there in a dusty layer of dry powdery snow. Arrived home as frozen drizzly rain was just starting.

Tough run

January 18, 2017 – 12:38 pm

Slush. Puddle. Slush. Ice. Above ankle freezing runoff washing over the trail. Downed trees. Off trail. Creeks become streams. Torrential chocolate-milk waterways. Wet shoe sticks to ice-patch. Pick it up. That third mile was a doozy.

Good traction

January 19, 2017 – 10:41 am

Good traction and solid ground for most of the run. I broke the eleven minute-mile barrier!

10k — exploring distance

January 22, 2017 – 12:29 pm

I have been running 5 mile distances recently. Races are generally offered in distances of 5k, 10k, half-marathon, marathon. I was reading up on the half-marathon, 13.1 miles, and read that a runner should aim to achieve at 10k / 60min ability before running a half marathon. I wondered, what is my 10k speed? And how long is a 10k?

10 kilometers is 6.2 miles. Just a mile point two longer than I’ve been running. And I’ve been running those five miles in a little under an hour. So how much longer would it take me to run just anothoer mile point two?

Today I ran my 5 mile run as usual, but at the end I looped through the neighborhood making up a route until my tech said I’d run 6.2 miles. Turns out I can run a 10k in about 70min.

Afterwards, I felt pretty good. It hadn’t been an agressive run, just a loose clear-your-mind run. I am of a mind to incorporate more 10k runs into my repertoire.

Another 10k

January 24, 2017 – 10:34 am

Pushing it

January 25, 2017 – 10:51 am

I started out thinking I’d run the first 5k(3mi) with gusto, really test my boundaries. After that, it was kind of easy maintaining a faster pace for the second 5k(3mi.) Tho, this was not a comfortable run, it was a test race. My goal isn’t to go fast, it’s simply to go.

January 26, 2017 – 10:39 am

I felt the fatigue from yesterday’s hustle in my run today. Intentionally ran slower pace. Still, it was a bit of a slog.

January 31, 2017 – 10:01 am

Glorious run.

2017 resolution update: January

I pledged to try running 250 miles this year. So far i’ve run 69 miles. At the end of January i’m already at 27% of my goal (69/250=0.276*100=27.6%). In other words: 1/12th of the year and over 1/4 of the way to my goal (25%=1/4).

  • Total miles: 69.2 miles
  • Fastest 5k: 29:50
  • Fasted 10k: 1:01:27
  • Longest run: 6.3 miles

February 1, 2017 – 10:23 am

10k. Comfortable pace. No injuries.

5mi = 8k

February 2, 2017 – 10:25 am

I feel gratitude for the compassion others have shown me, and compassion for those who struggle to find gratitude.

This 5 mile distance is starting to feel very  comfortable.
